A recent study published by the researchers at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland has found that many factors support living a long and healthy life. Habits such as physical activity, nutrition, not smoking, reducing stress and proper sleep can support a healthy life (Source: Medical News Today).
Project researcher at the Finnish university said that there exists a “correlation between leisure-time physical activity and mortality risk,” as per a previous study at the organization. That study shared an insight that this association could be a result of genetic factors which are not controlled.
However, the results of the recent study are contradictory from a study involving Swedish twins where they sound a relation that was “independent of genetic factors.“
The researchers claimed that despite the discrepancy, there is no sole responsibility of exercise in reducing the risk of chronic diseases. These include all-cause mortality, cardiovascular diseases in people with chronic conditions or in elderly populace.
The study collected data from nearly 11,000 sets of adult twins from the Finnish Twin Cohort. The data collection relied on the questionnaires, with segregation into four groups. These groups were – highly active, moderately active, active and sedentary.
The study found that nearly 40% of the participants from the sedentary group were dead during follow-up, representing the largest percentage.
The factors of BMI, alcohol use, smoking and health status when applied to this group resulted in a drop of 7%. Concluding, the study informs that some exercise along with better lifestyle habits such as proper sleep, healthy eating and no/less alcohol and tobacco use is the key to a healthy life.
